Bo-Kaap was one of the first places I found when I started researching Cape Town while my fiancé and I discussed moving here. Its colorful streets and distinctive character helped make the decision feel right.
Also called the Cape Malay Quarter, Bo-Kaap is home to descendants of people brought from Southeast Asia to the Cape by the Dutch during the 16th and 17th centuries. The neighborhood was originally built to house low-income families, but today properties here are highly desirable. Bo-Kaap is best known for its brightly painted houses and striking architecture, which together create a unique and photogenic streetscape.

Our visit was about more than admiring the facades. I had read about Atlas Trading Company, a local spice shop, and wanted to pick up a few ingredients for a Chicken Tikka Masala recipe I was developing. The shop is compact but packed floor to ceiling with spices, blends and aromas — it smelled incredible the moment we walked in.
On the shelves they carried their own labeled spice blends and packaged jars, each neatly arranged and easy to browse.

In addition to packaged items, there were large bins of bulk spices, perfect for anyone who wants to stock up. I almost convinced myself to buy a giant bag of smoked paprika before my fiancé reminded me we didn’t need quite that much.

With so many options available, I asked for a recommendation. Two blends caught my eye: “Mother-in-law Masala” and “Father-in-law Masala.” When I asked about the difference, the shopkeeper grinned and said, “Mother-in-law is much spicier,” which made me laugh. He advised that the Leaf Masala was the most popular, so I chose that — it turned out to be fantastic and became a go-to for my recipe.

Our short outing to Bo-Kaap was a delightful mix of history, culture and culinary discovery. The neighborhood invites slow strolling, photography and exploration, from the vivid houses to the family-run shops. We left with fragrant spice blends and plans to return.
Next time we want to sample the local cuisine at Biesmiellah and spend time at the Bo-Kaap Museum to learn more about the area’s history and traditions. Bo-Kaap is a small neighborhood full of atmosphere, and it’s easy to see why it draws visitors and locals alike.
