I love the results of deep carpet shampooing — it can transform a room — but the process is time-consuming. Moving furniture, waiting for carpets to dry, and dealing with disrupted routines make frequent shampooing impractical, especially with young children.

I reserve deep shampooing for major refreshes, about once a year, or for stubborn spots that won’t come out. For regular maintenance I rely on a dry carpet cleaner that’s simple, natural, and very effective.

Powerful natural carpet-cleaning ingredients

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer that helps lift stains and can assist with mold and mildew control.

Salt

Sea salt adds gentle abrasiveness to help lift dirt and stains from carpet fibers.

Cinnamon & Cloves

Ground cinnamon and cloves freshen carpets, add antibacterial properties, and neutralize lingering odors. Because both are brown, test a small hidden area on light-colored carpets to ensure no discoloration. I haven’t experienced issues, but results can vary by vacuum and material. If you’re concerned, skip the spices and use essential oils instead.

Ingredients for your simple carpet cleaner

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • ½ cup sea salt
  • 2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

If you prefer, use essential oils instead of ground spices. Add about 15 drops each of cinnamon and clove essential oils, or 30 drops of a single preferred essential oil such as lemon, lavender, orange, or peppermint to scent and boost deodorizing power.

How to make your dry carpet cleaner

  1. Combine the baking soda and sea salt in a shaker. A reused parmesan shaker or similar container works well.
  2. If using essential oils, add them to the salt so it absorbs and disperses the scent evenly.
  3. If using ground spices, add them directly to the baking soda and salt.
  4. Seal the container and shake until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed.

To use your homemade dry carpet cleaner

  • Vacuum the area thoroughly first, going over the carpet in multiple directions to remove loose dirt.
  • Sprinkle a thin, even layer of the dry cleaner over the carpet.
  • Use a broom to work the mixture into the fibers, sweeping in different directions to distribute it thoroughly.
  • You can leave the powder on for 15 minutes for a quick refresh, or several hours — even overnight — for a deeper clean.
  • Vacuum the area well to remove all residue.

To spot clean

This dry cleaner works well for fresh spots like red wine or ketchup. First blot the wet stain with a dry cloth to absorb as much as possible. Rinse the area with a mild solution of water and dish soap (about 1 tsp soap to 1 cup water), then blot again to remove excess moisture.

Sprinkle a small amount of the dry carpet cleaner over the damp area and work it in lightly. Let it dry completely, then vacuum the residue. This helps lift and absorb remaining stain elements and odors.

Removing blood stains

For fresh blood stains, 3% hydrogen peroxide is very effective. Pour a small amount directly onto the spot — it should fizz and bubble — then blot with a clean cloth or paper towel. Repeat until the stain lifts. Afterward, sprinkle a light layer of the dry carpet cleaner, work it in, let it dry, and vacuum.

Note: Hydrogen peroxide is a mild bleaching agent. Test on a hidden area first and avoid using it on dark carpets unless you’re sure it won’t affect the color.

If you have pets

For homes with pets, you can add ½ to 1 cup of diatomaceous earth to the mix. Food-grade diatomaceous earth helps deter fleas and ticks by dehydrating them and is a useful addition for pet-friendly households.

A bag is versatile and worth keeping on hand. It has other uses like deterring ants around windows and perimeters, acting as a gentle exfoliant in homemade scrubs, or as an alternative ingredient in DIY tooth powders for those sensitive to baking soda (do research before ingesting any product).

That’s it — an easy, natural, and budget-friendly dry carpet cleaner to keep carpets fresher between deep shampoo sessions.
