It’s Friday—time to celebrate with these playful french fry sugar cookie cartons. They’re simple to make, fun to decorate, and perfect for parties or a cheerful weekend baking project.
I used a 3-inch tall 3D-printed french fry carton cookie cutter that I’ve been wanting to try. Custom cutters are one of the best practical uses for 3D printing—affordable, customizable, and great for creating unique cookie shapes.
For the cookies themselves I followed a reliable sugar cookie and royal icing recipe. To make the fries appear to be popping out of the carton, I made a few simple adjustments to the basic carton cookie shape:
- Cut your carton shapes first using the cookie cutter.
- Use a straight edge to lightly press lines where the fries meet the carton—don’t cut through the dough, just create defined impressions.
- Roll out additional dough and cut thin strips to create extra fries.
- Trim the strips into shorter fry pieces and arrange a few on top of each carton cookie. Taper the bottom of each strip so it lays flatter against the cookie beneath; this helps the icing sit smoothly without looking lumpy.
Any remaining strip pieces can be baked as standalone fries. They look surprisingly realistic and make cute little extras for snacking or decorating.
When the carton cookies come out of the oven, immediately sprinkle the exposed top fry section with granulated sugar while the cookies are still warm so the sugar adheres. Use a toothpick to redefine the indented lines if needed so the fries read clearly as individual pieces.
Because Fridays deserve extra cheer, I added a little “YAY” flair to some cartons. Small candy letters fit perfectly inside the carton shape for a playful touch.
To make letters I used a small letter candy mold and yellow candy wafers. They matched the cutter size nicely, but you can achieve the same effect by piping letters with royal icing if you prefer.
Simple decorating tips:
- Outline each carton shape with tinted royal icing.
- Flood the interior with a flow consistency icing for a smooth finish.
- Pipe or place candy letters while the icing is still tacky so they set in place.
The finished cookies are flat enough to stack or package, yet realistic enough that you’ll want to reach in and grab a fry. They’re an adorable treat for fry lovers—my mom being a prime example—since they combine the charm of sugar cookies with the nostalgic look of fries.
