Surfing and Turfing Friday Night: Seafood and Steak Ideas

I never expected to pair those two words—surf and turf—because I always associated surf and turf with steak and lobster. I don’t have a taste for lobster yet; someday I might try it, but the idea of dismantling a crustacean on the same plate as my steak feels odd, even a little creepy. As a child I watched the lobster tank at the grocery store with my grandmother and assumed they were pets. Imagine my surprise at eight or nine when I learned people actually ate them. That discovery stuck with me, like the unsettling clowns I first saw on television. Maybe I should have read more about food back then.

Tonight’s dinner ended up being simple: grilled steak, vegetables and a baked potato. While reaching for the sour cream I noticed some leftover shrimp and handed them to Stephen to toss on the grill. Instant surf and turf—my version—tastes great and skips the lobster experiment.

Things at school are heating up—literally. It’s been a rough week, and I’m hoping calmer days are coming. Work stress makes me either skip meals or eat poorly; I’m still working on finding a better balance.
