The baby name Emmett reads as strong and sincere — an old-fashioned choice that feels fresh and appealing today.
Thanks to Jess for suggesting our Baby Name of the Day.
WHAT DOES THE NAME EMMETT MEAN?
Some sources connect Emmett to the same Hebrew roots as Emmanuel, but the name is most often treated as a masculine cousin of Emma.
Emma ultimately derives from the Germanic element ermen, meaning “universal.” Consider older names like Ermintrude and the shorter Irma, or Emmerich, which survives today as Emery.
The name Emma came from France to England with the Normans; Emma of Normandy married Æthelred the Unready and became queen in 1002.
Emmett arose as an affectionate diminutive of Emma. Medieval records show forms such as Emot and Emmot, and the surname developed from those -ot and -et endings.
Emmett is also sometimes inspired by place names with various possible meanings.
EMMET or EMMETT?
Both spellings have existed for many years, but the double-T Emmett has consistently been more common in modern usage. Notable bearers include famous clown Emmett Kelly, outlaw Emmett Dalton, and Doc Emmett Brown from the Back to the Future films (commonly called Doc).
Some characters use the single-T form: for example, Emmet Brickowski in The LEGO Movie. Historical and fictional figures with both spellings appeared in the US Top 1000 during the late 19th century, but overall the -mett spelling tends to be more popular.
MORE FAMOUS FIGURES
One tragic and important association is Emmett Till, a teenager murdered in Mississippi in 1955; his death became a catalyst for the civil rights movement and is commemorated on the Civil Rights Memorial.
Other cultural references include:
- Jim Henson’s 1977 television special Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas, a holiday tale about kindness and sacrifice.
- The football star Emmitt Smith, who spells his name with two m’s and two t’s; he featured in a popular advertising campaign about identity theft. (Note: Emmitt is a different spelling.)
- In the Legally Blonde films, Elle Woods’ thoughtful boyfriend is named Emmett.
- Emmett is also the name of one of Edward Cullen’s adoptive brothers in the Twilight series; that character is known for his physical strength.
- An Emmett appears in the 2016 sci-fi thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane.
HOW POPULAR IS THE NAME EMMETT?
After years of occasional use, Emmett has climbed alongside other -t ending names such as Elliott, Beckett, Bennett, and Everett. It’s now among the more popular choices for boys who end with a strong T sound.
Meanwhile, girls’ names beginning with Em remain extremely popular: Emma, Emily, Emilia, and Emery all rank highly, and related forms like Ember, Emerson, and Emberly are on the rise.
As of 2024, Emmett ranked around #119 in the United States. The single-T Emmet does not place in the current Top 1000.
MAINSTREAM FAVORITE

Emmett is a reliable, approachable choice for a son born today: familiar but not overused.
