3-Ingredient Caramel Sauce and Dip Recipe for Desserts

This caramel sauce is incredibly simple to make with just three ingredients: sugar, butter, and heavy cream. Homemade caramel is easier than most people think and perfect for dipping apples, topping ice cream, drizzling over pie, or simply enjoying by the spoonful.

I’m a bit of a sweet tooth, and caramel is my weakness. The flavor and silky texture keep me coming back for more. Make a batch when you want something indulgent—it’s quick, satisfying, and far better than store-bought jars.

All you need is LOVE… and Caramel.

3 Ingredient Caramel Dip (Quick & Easy!)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tbsp butter (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (preferably room temperature)
  • 1 tsp salt (optional)

Instructions

  • Heat the sugar in a large, dry pan over medium heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. The sugar will clump and then melt into a thick amber-brown liquid.
  • When the sugar is fully melted, add the butter in smaller chunks so it melts evenly. Be careful: the mixture will bubble vigorously and can splatter—use a larger pan if possible.
  • Stir for about 3 minutes until the butter is completely incorporated and the caramel is smooth.
  • Slowly drizzle in the heavy cream while stirring. Watch for splatters as the mixture will bubble up again.
  • Allow the mixture to boil gently for one to two minutes until it rises slightly and becomes glossy.
  • Remove from heat and stir in salt to taste, especially if you used unsalted butter.
  • Let the caramel cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before using. As it cools it will thicken.
  • Store leftovers in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, or at room temperature for up to two days.

Notes

  1. The cooler the caramel becomes, the thicker it gets. Heat it gently before drizzling over ice cream or pie for a smooth pour.
  2. Do not substitute regular milk. Condensed milk or half & half may work, but heavy cream gives the best texture and flavor.
